Finding The Right Toilet for Your Bathroom Design

When designing your new bathroom, there are plenty of elements to think about. One of the most important features is the toilet. After all, it’s the element that is going to get the most use. Therefore, you need to make sure that it’s not only right for your design, but it also functions how you want it to. With plenty of designs and styles out there, it can be hard to find the perfect toilet for your modern bathroom design. We’re here to run you through the different types of toilets and help you find the right style for your design.

Understanding The Terminology

When searching for bathroom toilets, you are likely to face a range of terminology that might be new to you. Understanding this terminology is a good place to start as often it gives key details about how the toilet looks and functions. So, what does it all mean?

Close-coupled: With a close-coupled toilet, the toilet bowl and the cistern will be closely connected. This allows the water to travel from the cistern to the bowl through the use of a flush button or handle. Close-coupled toilets are hardwearing and sturdy. With all parts exposed, they are also the easiest to install, making them the most popular choice. Being the most common toilet style, close-coupled toilets are fashionable with both modern and traditional bathroom designs.

Back-to-wall: A back-to-wall toilet attaches directly to the wall or can also be connected to a toilet furniture unit. Traditionally, back-to-wall toilets will feature a concealed cistern tank and plumbing, giving it a modern appeal. This design is also space-saving, making it the perfect choice for cloakrooms and ensuites. It is also possible for toilets to have a design that is a combination of back-to-wall and close coupled. In this instance, you get the beauty of the concealed plumbing without having to conceal the cistern, making it easier to install.

Wall-hung: As the name suggests, a wall-hung toilet is installed directly onto the wall. The difference between a wall-hung and a back-to-wall toilet is that where a back-to-wall toilet touches the floor, a wall-hung toilet floats on the wall. This allows for this height to be adjusted to accommodate a range of needs. Given their minimalist and modern appeal, wall-hung toilets are seen as the stylish alternative, providing more floor space and a streamlined design. With a wall-hung toilet, the plumbing and cistern are again concealed.

Concealed vs exposed cisterns: A concealed cistern is where the cistern tank is hidden behind a wall or furniture unit, allowing for a modern, minimalist and space-saving design. With all plumbing hidden, it also means less cleaning and maintenance to keep your bathroom looking great. However, concealing the cistern within a wall requires a cavity space. If this is not available then an exposed cistern will be the way to go. There are plenty of styles of toilets featuring an exposed cistern that maintain a sleek and minimalist look if that’s what you’re after.
