What is Modern Interior Design?
Modern interior design is a design style that first emerged in the early to mid-20th century and has continued to adapt throughout the years to newer technologies, preferences and needs. While it is often used interchangeably with contemporary design, they are in fact two distinctly different design styles.
Modern interior design features a simple, uncluttered and clean aesthetic with a balance between decorations and their intended purpose. This design style has origins in German Bauhaus and Scandinavian designs. The Bauhaus school of design created a design movement in the early 20th century that placed a greater focus on function over form, resulting in minimalist, functional and experimental spaces. Scandinavian design also takes a minimalist approach but with a comfy, welcoming appeal ideal for the home.
Features of Modern Bathroom Design
MinimalismMinimalism is possibly the most noticeable feature of modern design. Where design styles of the past have taken bold, eclectic and maximalist approaches, modern interior design focuses on more scales back appearance. This design style places greater importance on functionality, meaning that only the necessary décor items are placed within a room to make it functional. This creates a reduction of clutter and opens up the space for a more clean, calming design. There are a few ways to achieve this in your bathroom. Firstly, a vanity unit with a clean design will provide plenty of storage space to keep your bathroom clutter-free. Opting for a concealed shower valve and fixed shower head will remove the pipework from view, allowing only the elements you need to interact with to be visible. The same logic applied to toilets with a concealed cistern. |
Natural, Organic Materials
Natural materials feature heavily in modern design and there are two reasons why. Firstly, with the ever-growing need for environmentally conscious design, natural materials provide an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative. Additionally, recent interior design trends have incorporated elements of nature to bring the soothing atmosphere of the environment into the home, and there is no better way to do this than through natural materials. These materials include things such as stone, wood, metal and glass. The easiest way to begin to bring natural materials into your bathroom is through your furniture. Our furniture ranges are made from MDF which is a material made from recycled wood shavings making it eco-friendly in production and recyclable after use. We also have natural wood finishes, such as Golden Oak, Cherry Wood Effect and Caramel, to bring the calming essence of nature into your bathroom space. |
Clean Lines
Simple, clean lines are a distinctive characteristic of modern interior design and is the feature with the closest link to German and Scandinavian styles. Taking a simple approach with the removal of additional flourishes embraces a natural way of life. It returns the space to a basic functional design where form becomes a secondary consideration. This creates a calming environment where the mind can be soothed without the distraction of clutter or unnecessary decoration. Take our Hoxton 2.0 brassware and accessories for example. From basin taps to shower valves to towel rails, this collection features a simple and minimalist design with clean, straight lines. In some cases, these clean lines are combined with simple circles to add an element of geometric intrigue while remaining consistent with the modern style. |
Monochrome and Neutral Colour Schemes
Whereas many previous design styles throughout history use bold, striking colours, modern interior design takes a more neutral approach. A monochrome colour palette is most common, featuring whites, beiges, greys, blacks and muted pastel tones for a little bit of colour. While you might initially think that a monochrome scheme is a bit too dull for your taste, you can easily turn your bathroom into a warm and inviting space through the addition of décor with unique textures and shades, for example through your bathmat. To pull this off, it’s all about finding the right layering of colours and textures. To get started on your neutral or monochrome bathroom, take a look at our striking matt black brassware. This shade adds a level of sophistication to the space as well as creating contrast. If you are wanting to add a little bit of colour through muted tones, our Camberwell furniture collection features a number of pastel finishes to bring through a bit of personality without overpowering the space with colour. |
